Overview

Seen as the mother of all Thai markets, and based on ancient principles of buying and selling merchandise to even the more remote communities in Thailand, the Danmern Saduak Floating Market is an institution in its own right. For years, paddle boats sail up and down the narrow canals of the Ratchaburi province, approximately 110 kilometres southwest of Bangkok, where a plethora of food, snacks and fruit are bringing an explosion of colours and smells across the market. With its immense popularity, this morning-only trading ground has further expanded with souvenirs of all kinds, yet the foundation of this market remains untouched; to maintain the country’s trading history by using its canals and thoroughfares as transportation ‘roads’.

What To Expect

Maeklong Railway Market (Talad Rom Hub)
We will pick you up in the early morning from your hotel lobby and accompanied by your guide and driver, we head out in the direction of the Ratchaburi province to the Damnern Saduak Floating Market, one of Thailand’s icons. It will take approximately 2 hours to reach the marketing and buzzing place which is at its best in the early morning before the crowds arrive and the heat of the day builds up.

First, we head down to the authentic rural Maeklong Station Market, a vibrant place to see the various fresh fruits and vegetable produces from the region displayed here.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market
After Maeklong, we will visit the famous Damnern Saduak Floating Market which is seen as one of Bangkok’s icons. It dates back to 1866 when King Rama IV ordered that a canal 32 kilometres long be dug at Damnern Saduak to connect the Mae Klong and Tacheen Rivers.

The Floating Market is an ideal place for tourists to see the old style and traditional way of selling and buying fruits, vegetables and other from small boats. Tourists will also be able to see traditional Thai houses and the way locals use boats in their everyday lives.

During your visit, there will be lots of activity and bargaining is part of the fun of the sale. The market’s popularity among visitors has grown over the years and outside the traditional means of selling and trading food and drinks, souvenir shops around the market are home to some of the best local handicraft one can buy.

We head back to Bangkok where our guide and driver will drop you off at your booked hotel in the Thai capital

Reviews

Fun place, worth checking out, plenty of photo ops too

I enjoyed this market alot, you go there, get in a boat and tool around the area, you can stop, shop and even buy things and great food from other boats passing by. Lots of tourists but it was very unique and I have not seen a place like this in all of my travels. Great food too and many colorful photo ops too. I enjoyed it. It is worth the time to go seek it out out of Bangkok and to also pair it with a tour of the railway nearby with the market there too. I loved it.
Loved it, but way too expensive

It was a beautiful experience, and our tour guide was amazing. A lot of the stuff sold on the river could found much cheaper in the markets. But it’s an experience we enjoyed and we bought some beautiful paintings
A trip worthwhile

There are a lot of bad reviews about this. Yes they try to sell you things, and yes they hook your boat but you are not obliged to buy and a friendly no thank you does the trick. Just be open minded and smile and enjoy the scenery. Try to spot a goanna in the quiter parts of the waterways and get your longboat captain to turn it up. Good fun overall.
Fun trip, wonderful experience but a bit expensive

It was a nice trip, unique experience and lovely sellers and staff
The boat and floating market and the elephant village and the monkey show costs 4000 baht per person and took us about 4 hours
But the prices are high, we bought some pants for 200 baht at khaosan road and here it was 1000 baht, we bought a mini bag for 300 baht from here then we found it at Asiatequ river front night market for 70-80 baht
Average and a bit of a trap, but.....

One to tick off your list, but once you are on board you are locked in for a perusal of 99 things you would never ordinarily buy!
That said, a bit of fun, if a little murky and we only paid for 45 minutes to whizz around, which I can assure you is more than enough time unless you are hopping off for a bite to eat in the main section (which is possible). Double up with the train market (do that one first) and it is a full morning done outside of Bangkok.....
That chap in my review picture sums up the enthusiasm unless you want to buy!!
